Building Be Your Stories: From Concept to Production on Web, iOS & Android

Architectural blueprint and product lessons from building an offline-first cross-platform reading and storytelling platform live on App Store and Google Play.

The Vision Behind Be Your Stories #

In digital content creation, writers and readers frequently face fragmented experiences: web platforms often lack mobile polish, while standalone mobile apps isolate desktop authors.

Be Your Stories (BYS) was engineered to solve this dilemma by providing a unified digital ecosystem across Web, iOS, and Android. The primary goal was clear:

  1. Provide an instantaneous, distraction-free reading experience.
  2. Empower creators with rich formatting, draft persistence, and seamless discovery.
  3. Guarantee that readers can access their library offline regardless of network conditions.

Architectural Foundation #

To deliver a snappy experience across desktop browsers, iPads, and mobile phones, we architected the system with three primary principles:

1. Offline-First Synchronization #

Mobile reading happens in planes, subways, and low-connectivity environments. Treating the network as a fragile transport rather than a prerequisite is essential.

  • Local Persistence Layer: Content is cached locally using transactional key-value stores.
  • Optimistic UI Updates: User actions (bookmarking, progress tracking, highlights) commit locally in 0ms, appending mutations to an idempotent synchronization queue.
  • Delta-Sync Strategy: When connectivity resumes, the client transmits change deltas with timestamp-based conflict resolution, minimizing network bandwidth and eliminating sync collisions.

2. Cross-Platform Code Sharing #

Maintaining distinct codebases for Web and Mobile burns velocity. By structuring shared domain logic in TypeScript:

  • 80%+ Business Logic Parity: State machines, API contracts, sync queues, and validation schemas are shared across platforms.
  • Platform-Native UI Shells: Responsive layouts adapt gracefully to touch gestures on smartphones, expanded split views on tablets, and mouse interactions on desktop.
typescript
// Core synchronization contract shared across Web & Mobile
export interface SyncMutation<T = unknown> {
  id: string;
  entity: "story" | "progress" | "bookmark";
  action: "upsert" | "delete";
  payload: T;
  clientTimestamp: number;
  retryCount: number;
}

Production Milestones #

Shipping across both app stores requires strict attention to platform guidelines:

  • Apple App Store Review: Verified strict privacy controls, smooth in-app navigation, and iPad multitasking support.
  • Google Play Store: Optimized APK/AAB bundle size, managed background worker lifecycle, and verified diverse device form factors.
  • Performance Profiling: Maintained 60 FPS transitions and sub-100ms cold startup times on budget mobile hardware.

Key Learnings #

  1. Start with domain models, not UI screens: Well-defined entities made multi-platform data syncing straightforward.
  2. Design for latency: Instant feedback loops build user trust, especially in reading and writing tools.
  3. Automate deployment pipelines early: Fast CI/CD pipelines allow rapid bug fixes and continuous releases across stores.

Be Your Stories is currently live on Web, Apple App Store, and Google Play.
